John Martin of Nelson Mullins Encompass Speaks at Law School Premier of Decade of Discovery

November 3, 2014

On Nov. 3, the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Center on Professionalism at the University of South Carolina School of Law hosted the first law school screening of the documentary film, "The Decade of Discovery." The film chronicles the impact of the information explosion on the courts and the government.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion that included S.C. Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman, a signatory of the Sedona Conference “Cooperation Proclamation”; Sarah Montgomery, the supervising attorney for the DOJ e-discovery help desk; John D. Martin of Nelson Mullins; Joe Looby, the filmmaker; and Jason Baron, who was among a number of individuals featured in the film.

Mr. Martin addressed a number of issues as part of the panel discussion, including providing insights on having a productive dialogue up front to better align the scope of what is requested and what is needed in discovery, and on the need for early work on the part of both parties at the beginning of the case.

Beginning on Nov. 12, film screenings and discussions will take place in a number of legal markets, including Chicago, Houston, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and New York City.
