John Martin was a featured speaker on the topic of Managing Government Investigations at the 47th Annual BlueCross BlueShield Association Lawyers Conference on October 29, 2013 in Phoenix, Arizona. BCBSA is an association of independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies, whose annual conference goal is to increase awareness among its members of the most pressing and relevant healthcare industry topics of the day.

John’s presentation included an overview of the components of an investigation, including triggers such as whistleblowers, private litigation and government-initiated actions. John outlined crucial first steps to be taken within the first 48 hours, including scoping and evaluation, internal planning, identification of key players, securing information, open agency dialog, and process documentation. John concluded the discussion by addressing best practices for avoiding potential investigation pitfalls in order to minimize adversarial tone and to properly address breadth and scope.
